BMR, NEAT, TDEE and Your Metabolism
A deep understanding of how your body burns calories
When we talk about "metabolism" or the number of calories we burn per day, we are actually talking about an equation made up of several variables. Understanding these concepts is the key to controlling body weight.
BMR
Basal Metabolic Rate
This is the number of calories your body burns at complete rest, just to stay alive. Think of it as if you were lying in bed all day without moving or eating.
What does it include?
Breathing, heart activity, brain function, body temperature regulation, and internal organ activity.
Importance
BMR makes up the lion's share of daily calorie burning (usually about 60–70% of total calories).
What affects it?
- • Age: decreases with age
- • Weight and height: the larger the body, the more energy it requires
- • Muscle mass: muscle burns more calories than fat at rest
- • Genetics and gender
NEAT
Non-Exercise Activity Thermogenesis
This is the "tricky" and most significant part that people tend to overlook. It is the total calories burned in every action we do that is not sleep or a structured workout.
What does it include?
Walking to the car, standing in line, typing on a computer, cooking, cleaning the house, playing with children, and even small movements in a chair.
Importance
The difference in NEAT between a sedentary person (office worker) and an active person can reach hundreds — even 2,000 calories a day!
Tip
A great way to increase caloric expenditure without "working out" is simply to increase your NEAT: park further away, take the stairs, walk during phone calls.
TDEE
Total Daily Energy Expenditure
This is the final number. The total sum of all the calories your body burned in 24 hours. This is the number used to build a nutrition plan.
The Formula
TDEE = BMR + NEAT + EAT + TEF
The Missing Components:
EAT - Exercise Activity Thermogenesis
Calories burned during intentional exercise (running, gym, swimming). Contrary to popular belief, this is usually a relatively small portion (only about 5–10%).
TEF - Thermic Effect of Food
The energy the body burns to digest and absorb the food we ate (protein requires the most energy to digest).

Why Does This Matter?
To lose weight: Eat less than your TDEE (caloric deficit)
To gain weight: Eat more than your TDEE (caloric surplus)
To maintain weight: Eat exactly your TDEE (neutral balance)
